  • Quaker ministers imprisoned at York Castle, 1652

    Thomas Aldam, Elizabeth Hooton, William Pears, Benjamin Nicholson, Jane Holmes, and Mary Fisher were among the first Quakers imprisoned at York Castle, for offences such as interrupting church services and denouncing priests. While imprisoned in 1652, they collaborated on the pamphlet "False Prophets and False Teachers Described."
