“That of God” Is a Call to Action
Responding to the question, “What do Quakers mean by ‘that of God in everyone’?”
“As a nontheist Quaker, I’ve taken to phrasing this as “that of the light in everyone” for my own spiritual comfort. For me, this speaks to our interconnectedness and responsibility to steward our actions toward true equality and dignity for all [….] This also speaks to potential.
Everyone has the capacity for wisdom, goodness, and equality, but light can be hidden or even snuffed out. It helps me come to terms with people enacting great evil in the world and still acknowledging their foundational humanity while strongly condemning and working against that which pulls us further away from true equality. This phrase reminds me to put misconceptions, prejudgments, and fears aside and to act in a way which affirms the dignity of the person in front of me. It’s a call to action for me.”
