Take your feet from off our necks

“I ask no favors for my sex. I surrender not our claim to equality. All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from off our necks, and permit us to stand upright on that ground which God designed us to occupy.”

— Sarah Grimke, 1837
Quaker women’s rights activist and abolitionist

  • Sarah Moore Grimke (1792 – 1873) was an American abolitionist and feminist, widely held to be the mother of the women's suffrage movement. Born and reared in South Carolina to a prominent and wealthy planter family, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the 1820s and became a Quaker, as did her younger sister Angelina. The sisters spoke on the abolitionist lecture circuit. They recounted their knowledge of slavery firsthand, urged abolition, and also became activists for women's rights.
