What seed have you planted in the past that is now coming to fruit?
What seeds are you currently planting?
It is not so much that I planted a seed, but rather that I watered the seeds that others planted. I have recognized the importance of their leadings, listened, and encouraged them as I helped to make their seeds grow.
Currently, I am planting a seed in our meeting and quarter that we need to care for each other. We need to support young people trying to find their place in the world. We need to support young families in the care of their children. And we need to support the elderly as they face the challenges of the final part of their lives. We all have a Ministry to care for one another.

As a Gen X-era Young Friend, the seeds I planted were tended to by a spiritual gardener from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting named Cookie Caldwell. He led our intrepid, awkward, creative, quirky group of both young Quakers and Quaker-adjacent teens with mindfulness, intentional care and unconditional support.
Last month, a small but mighty group of us held our first reunion gathering at Camp Onas in Ottsville, PA to rekindle and tend to those seeds of friendship we all planted circa 1989-1999 to reunite in a time of heaviness. Out of this long dormant garden, our Quaker values and friendships began to blossom again.

Thirty-six years ago I had a baby boy. Now I am helping soothe my baby granddaughter as she is teething. Another seed, and I am so afraid for her and all children of the world she is going to have to grow up in.

The seeds I've planted are the work I've been doing within myself, which includes taking real accountability for my choices and my mishandling of my actions. Not an easy task because you can't play the victim. The fruit that's blooming now is greater wisdom and empathy, but best of all, my ability to help others navigate the roads I've traveled.

Imagining a future Quaker universe
“Imagine the Quaker universe of hyper-local monthly meetings, residential and educational institutions, Yearly Meetings, national and international organizations imitating the seamless integration of natural living systems. Imagine their having the unified capacity to look out over regional, national, and international landscapes and identify ‘pressure points’ where Friends could make strategic interventions and offer Quaker approaches to shift critical discourse.” …

Are Quakers guarding our treasure too closely?
“I believe that Quakers have a beautiful gem to offer. There are times when we are so busy protecting the box that holds the gem, we can forget that other people might want to see it. I wonder about this. I think that in order to live into a strong Quaker future, we need to do a better job of inviting people in.” …

Navigating the conflicts that come from truth
“If we want to be a people who can speak to the brokenness of the world and the people caught in that brokenness, it is important for us to speak the truth and to be able to navigate the conflicts that inevitably come from the truth.” …

It is not what you were, but what you are
“Time past is none of yours: it is not what you were, but what you are; God will be daily looked unto. Did you eat yesterday? That feeds you not today: therefore, Jesus taught his disciples, and us in them, to pray for our daily bread, for the present sustenance; and to look no further, but depend upon the Lord….” …

The perpetual Now
“Growth is the test of healthy life, and that which it behooves us to promote in our spiritual being. To this end, the soul should be in a state of perpetual progress. Never therefore, stop to gaze either backwards or forwards…. Our business is to unite ourselves with the great I AM—the perpetual Now; and with Nature, as renewed and advanced every moment by his hand. Let us yield ourselves to him and his working as the plants and flowers of the field do.” …
