  • Octavia Estelle Butler (1947 – 2006) was an American science fiction and speculative fiction writer who won several awards for her works, including Hugo, Locus, and Nebula awards. In 1995, Butler became the first science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. Often called the “grand dame of science fiction”, she was the first Black woman to achieve national recognition in the field.
