Lucy Behenna was the Quaker cofounder of the organization Mothers for Peace. She gave her life savings to send groups of peacemakers to visit the two superpowers – the USA and the Soviet Union. Mothers were chosen because they have a special affinity with one another and a common desire to secure a safe and peaceful world for their children. The first visits to the US and the Soviet Union occurred simultaneously in 1981. From this beginning the work has continued and extended, involving women from many countries and cultures. The organization is now called Women to Women for Peace.
